World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 15 June - It's not OK

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 15 June - It's not OK

by Age Concern Tauranga, 15 Jun 2018

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  It marks the beginning of raising awareness of elder abuse during the week of 15 to 22 June.

Age Concern elder abuse statistics show that:

  • 79% of cases include psychological abuse
  • 54% of cases involve financial abuse
  • 76% of alleged abusers are family members
  • 60% of the alleged abusers are adult children or grandchildren
  • Alleged abusers are as likely to be female as male

There is a fear with older people that if they speak out they will lose the only social support network they have, especially if the abuser is a relative. Although we are no longer the Elder Abuse Neglect Prevention Service for the Tauranga area, we are hear to listen if you are worried about the safety of an older person/kaumatua. Our office number is 578 2631.

Alternatively you can ring the Ministry of Social Development helpline on 0800 32 668 65.  You can call this number any time, any day.  Your call will be answered by a registered nurse who will put you in touch with your local service provider.

It's not OK - Everyone needs to stand up and make sure they all play a part in protecting our older people and asking for our help if they suspect any abuse is happening.
